Nearly 100 People Killed in Israeli Attack on North Gaza, Hamas-Run Civil Defence Reported
Nearly 100 Palestinians were killed by an Israeli airstrike targeting northern Gaza, according to Hamas-run Civil Defence agency. The attack comes amid ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hamas that has intensified humanitarian suffering in war-torn enclave.
Airstrikes hit residential areas in Jabalia refugee camp and surrounding neighborhoods, resulting in widespread destruction and trapping dozens of victims under rubble. Emergency responders with limited equipment are still conducting rescue operations in an effort to find survivors.
“The scenes are devastating,” according to Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson of Gaza’s Civil Defence. “Entire families have been decimated and we expect the death toll to continue rising as we search through debris piles.”
Local hospitals already struggling with limited supplies and electricity were overwhelmed by the sudden surge of casualties. Images from the aftermath show heavily damaged buildings, smoke-filled skies, and crowds carrying injured civilians to makeshift treatment centers.
Israeli forces have not confirmed a strike but have stated they are carrying out operations against what it identifies as “terrorist infrastructure” in Gaza’s northern sector. A statement by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed these include targeting Hamas militants and underground tunnels being used for military purposes.
“The IDF is adhering to international law and taking measures to minimize harm to civilians,” according to an Israeli Defense Force (IDF) statement. Unfortunately, Hamas embeds its operations within civilian areas thereby endangering their own population.
This latest escalation comes amid growing international concern over civilian casualties in Gaza. The UN and several humanitarian groups have renewed their calls for an immediate ceasefire and unhindered access for aid deliveries into besieged Strip.
“Every life lost is a tragedy,” stated Lynn Hastings, UN Humanitarian Coordinator. “The scale of suffering in Gaza is unacceptable; therefore we urge all parties to prioritize protecting civilians and allow humanitarian relief to reach those most in need.”
Since the outbreak of conflict, an estimated 35,000 Palestinians have been reported as killed according to Gaza health authorities. Meanwhile, Israel argues that their military campaign is necessary in response to ongoing rocket attacks and threats from militant groups.
Regional powers such as Egypt and Qatar continue to engage in diplomatic efforts aimed at brokering a truce. Unfortunately, with both sides laying blame and violence showing no signs of abating, a resolution remains elusive.
As the death toll continues to increase, Gazans remain caught up in an ever-intensifying humanitarian catastrophe and experience devastating losses as their civilian population.
