Eyewitnesses of the explosion described an unnerving scene following its impact. Abdulkadir Hassan Mohamed, a tuk-tuk driver who witnessed it all said, “There was a loud explosion, and immediately people started running in all directions – bodies were everywhere.” (Reuters +3) [AP News | 3 | 18 )
Hussein, part of the camp’s guard unit, reported that young recruits were waiting in line when an explosion took place and saw many casualties; Hussein stated “The explosion was devastating; I saw many casualties. The attacker disguised himself as a recruit before blowing himself up.” The Washington Post and AP News both published reports detailing this tragedy on February 20, 2012.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that up to 30 soldiers had been killed and 50 injured as a result.
