On Tuesday morning in Khuzdar district of Balochistan, tragedy struck when a school bus carrying children and teachers was targeted in an extreme bombing attack that killed five – three innocent children among them – while also injuring numerous others in Wadh area of Khuzdar district, sending shockwaves throughout the region and drawing national condemnation.
law enforcement officials believe the blast was caused by an IED planted along the roadside and detonated as the school bus traveled toward a private school in the city. The explosion was so powerful it reduced parts of the vehicle to mangled metal while scattering debris across nearby streets and shattering windows of nearby buildings.
Eyewitnesses have reported seeing both a school driver and teacher accompanying children die on-site; three schoolchildren under age 12 also lost their lives instantly. Eyewitnesses described an atmosphere of panic and horror at the scene; nearby residents attempted to rescue survivors before emergency responders could arrive on scene.
Local hospitals reported at least eight people had been injured, including other students suffering shrapnel wounds and fractures. Emergency units at Khuzdar Civil Hospital confirmed several remain critical condition and efforts are currently being made to transfer them to more equipped facilities in Quetta.
